Sleep Disorder Center

The Sleep Disorder Center is devoted to the diagnostic evaluation of various sleep-related disorders. Four major diagnostic classification of sleep and arousal disorders are recognized by the Association of Professional Sleep Societies.

  1. DIMS: Disorders of initiating and maintaining sleep
  2. DOES: Disorders of excessive somnolence
  3. Parasomnias: Dysfunctions associated with sleep, sleep stages, or partial arousals
  4. Disorders of the "sleep-wake schedule"

What will happen when I come in for testing?

The Sleep Disorders Center has been made to be as much like a bedroom as possible. The testing process, although extensive, is comfortable, and the bedrooms are quiet and relaxing.

No shots or medication are given during testing, but a number of sensors are used to monitor brain waves, eye movement, muscle tension, heart activity, blood oxygen saturation, breathing effort, and airflow. This will be the safest night's sleep you will ever have.

Sleep: Health and Restoration

Sleep is not merely "time out" from daily life. It is an active state, essential for physical and mental restoration.

Many people say, "I don't have a sleep problem; I can sleep anytime." Excessive daytime sleepiness goes unrecognized much of the time because it comes on gradually as our sleep disorders progress. There are five sleep stages that comprise the normal night's sleep. A sleep disorder may prohibit some of the deeper, more restorative stages. People suffering from a sleep disorder may wake in the morning knowing that they have slept all night and cannot understand why they are still tired.
