Pulmonary Rehabilitation
What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
Pulmonary Rehabilitation is a program for people with lung diseases such as asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis.
The Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Mercy Memorial Hospital incorporates education and exercise to help you manage your breathing problems. Each participant is closely monitored by a registered nurse and a registered respiratory therapist to ensure your safety. Our small class size (4-6 people) allows for more individual attention. We provide a strong social support system for you to interact with other people who have the same breathing difficulties.
What are the Benefits of Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
- increased energy levels
- decreased shortness of breath
- increased ability to do daily activities (climbing stairs, walking, and lifting)
- decreased anxiety and depression
- increased muscle strength and flexibility
- decreased hospitalizations
- increased knowledge of pulmonary disease and how to manage it
Why Should You Attend Pulmonary Rehabilitation?
For people with breathing problems, the fear of being short of breath can be overwhelming. Often this fear of becoming short of breath influences decisions about which activities we pursue and which ones we avoid.
Unfortunately, these decisions often lead to more fatigue and disabilities. This cycle of disability is very difficult to break. Your decision and commitment to develop a healthier and more active lifestyle is the first step to an improved quality of life.
To provide additional support we also have a Better Breathers Club that meets the third Wednesday of each month at Mercy Memorial. Follow the link above for more information.
