Phase II
Phase II is an outpatient program that allows the patient to come to Mercy Memorial Hospital three times a week for six to 12 weeks for individually designed exercise.
The exercise room looks like a small gymnasium with treadmills, exercise bicycles, rowing machines, and other exercise equipment. There is a difference, however. This room also contains emergency medicine, heart monitors, lifesaving equipment -- and staff members experienced in their use.
Each patient must be referred to cardiac rehabilitation services by his or her physician. Patient may be required to take a stress test before beginning rehabilitation. From data gathered during these tests, staff members design individualized exercise program for each patient.
Patients are monitored throughout each session for heart irregularities, blood pressure changes, chest pain, or other abnormalities.
Throughout cardiac rehabilitation, patients are encouraged to learn about heart disease and to eliminated life-style risk factors.
The goal of Phase II is to return each patient to a healthy and productive life, with optimum physical, emotional, vocational, and recreational health, as soon as possible.
Phase III
Mercy Memorial's Phase III cardiac rehabilitation program is similar to Phase II.
Phase III participants, however, are not required to wear equipment that continuously monitors their cardiac activity during exercise. Blood pressure and pulse are checked during each visit.
Phase III cardiac rehabilitation can continue as a long-term maintenance program.
