INTRAVENOUS INFUSION

The following procedures are applicable for EMT-S and EMT-P licensed personnel only.

A. Using standard aseptic techniques a peripheral I.V. line may be established as indicated.

1. Only two (2) venipuncture will be made.

2. When there are extenuating circumstances, additional attempts may be approved by Medical Control.

3. An intraosseous line may be performed* if a peripheral I.V. is not established after two (2) attempts (See Intraosseous Infusion)

4. Regulate the flow rate according to SOP's or the On-Line Medical Control as ordered.

B. Blood Chemistries

A red or orange top tube should be drawn on any known or suspected diabetic reaction (Hypo/Hyperglycemia)

* Special Note: Rescuer must be trained in this procedure.
